Ray Fitzpatrick on Patient Reported Outcomes

Keeping the Patient in the Picture: Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROM)

In this video made by the University of Oxford, Prof Ray Fitzpatrick and his colleagues talk about how they pioneered the use of questionnaires about hip and knee replacements, and revolutionised how patients’ experience could be used to assess and improve the UK’s healthcare.

Patient choice over treatment and care is a central feature of the UK’s National Health System, and patients' experience of treatment and care is a major indicator of quality. But it isn’t easy to find out how well a treatment has worked. Nuffield's Ray Fitzpatrick played a key role in developing the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) that provides consistency in patient reported outcomes. It is short, reproducible, valid and sensitive to clinically important changes.

Prior to the development of the OHS, only crude measures of surgical failure, such as the need to perform revision surgery, had been employed in the assessment of patient outcomes.

Find out more about Patient Reported Outcome Measures on the NHS website.
